Streets Are For People are hosting a big picnic this Sunday!
RECLAIMED CONSTRUCTION ZONE TO MAKE WAY FOR STREET PICNICMore details on the Events Blog.
This Sunday, July 13, a road construction site on Bathurst Street between Bloor and Dupont will be filled with merry picnickers from all over the city.
The fifth annual Streets are for Picnics will occupy the three lanes of Bathurst currently closed for road work, leaving one remaining, north-bound lane open to the more commonplace car traffic. The event has been timed to coincide with the closing of an eco-themed exhibition of hand-made, decorated canvas bags at Keep Six Contemporary gallery (938 Bathurst).

City of Toronto Cycling staff are doing great things in 2008 - a great example is this party for the "official" opening of the Rogers Road Bike Lane:
![]()
The Rogers bike lane has been installed from Oakwood Avenue to Old Weston Road. Come join the City's cycling staff celebrate this new bike lane on Thursday July 3rd from 8 to 10 a.m. at Boon Avenue & Rogers Road. There will be free coffee, juice and treats! ZM Cycle & Fitness will also provide free bike repairs at the event.
The installation of the Rogers bike lane brings the total length of bike lanes in Toronto at 78.6 kilometers. The Bike Plan call for the installation of nearly 500 kilometers of bike lanes by 2012 - and this new bike lane brings us one step closer to achieving our goal.
In the event of heavy rain or thunderstorms, please join us on our rain date on Wednesday July 9th.
I hope they keep doing this for bike lanes as they are installed...

I'm glad I didn't go to Critical Mass on Friday, for it embraced nuisance-making and went up on the Gardiner Expressway.

Is this productive at all in showing bikes are a valid transportation option?
My feeling is that crazy stunts like this just further perpetuate the stereotype of cyclists as crazy activists who can't fit in to normal society.
Sunday morning was the Ride for Heart - why not wait 36 hours and ride the Gardiner and DVP for a good cause?
Want to discuss it? I've started a discussion about this on the BikingToronto Community.
[I wrote the above words on Saturday afternoon, just after hearing about this... and I've had a day and a half to think about it since... in addition to cycling the DVP and Gardiner legally as part of the Ride for Heart, and my thoughts haven't changed in that time..., reflected below in a comment I just left on the BlogTO post about this...]:
Critical Mass is great when it sticks to downtown roads (ie. streets bikes are legally entitled to) and is a fun community ride for friends and families.
When it's horrible is when it does something like riding on the Gardiner as a symbolic "f-you" to a society dominated by car use and car culture.
Guess what happens when you give the finger to society? It gives it right back to you... forget being involved (even nominally) which transportation policy changes if you act like a 12 year old with a chip on his shoulder.
Do you think City Hall or the Province, or Metrolinx or anyone with any influence to increase the role of bicycles on the streets of Toronto will have anything to do with "activists" who only really accomplish pissing people off rather than working towards constructive, co-operative change?
What do you think?

Bells on Bloor on Sunday was a huge success. Atleast 1000 cyclists attended, with some the police count being 1200-1500!
Here's a great photo from Martin Reis that sums up the ride.
You can view Martin's whole set here, and also Gabi's set is on Flickr as well!
It's BikeMonth now, so instead of the usual "Cycling Events This Week" post - I'm going to try and post a daily "here's what's going on tomorrow" post for you. You can always find all events on the BikingToronto Events Page.
