BikingToronto - Information about Cycling in Toronto <data:blog.pageTitle/>

Here are the 10 blog posts that saw the most action in May.

1. Two New Electric Bike Stores in Town
Whether or not you've seen them, or like them, or think they have a right to use bikelanes, you're about to see a lot more of them. Electric Bike manufacturer and retailer Daymak has just opened up two new stores in Toronto (at Richmond & Jarvis and Bloor & Dundas).

2. Reminder: Toronto Critical Mass is Tonight
Join hundreds of cyclists for a group ride around downtown Toronto.
Bloor & Spadina - meet at 6 pm, ride at 6:30
(click for more info)

3. Metrolinx Ignoring City, Wants a Strachan Ave Super-Bridge
From Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone's office, via the Bike Union, comes news that Metrolinx is planning a big "Super-Bridge" for Strachan Avenue where it passes over the CN rail corridor.

4. Rachel McAdams: Another Celebrity Who Loves Biking Toronto
What did you do during your sabbatical?
I bought a house in Toronto. I spent time there with my family members and friends. I traveled to Europe. I started doing yoga. Actually, I really got into yoga -- Kundalini -- and love it. I also started a website with friends [greenissexy.org]...

How do you live green?
I don't own a car. In Toronto, my bike is my car.

5. Elsewhere: Bike Polo Hits New York City
Passing by the corner of Chrystie and Broome Sts., one could easily miss the hottest new sporting event in town. That’s because the arena is tucked below ground level in a funky, 7,000-square-foot asphalt pit. Here a bunch of daredevils in jeans and scruffy shirts play a lively game of polo on bicycles, as they circle and glide back and forth at a mesmerizing pace.

6. 8 Secrets To Cycling In Traffic (Complete Series)
As promised, here's all 8 Secrets in one post (I have them linked individually down at the bottom, if that's what floats your boat...). This is the easiest way to print out all of them into a poster you can hang in your bedroom, cubicle and on your grocery store bulletin board.

7. Headlines: Cyclist Hit on Coxwell
The man was riding in the curb lane on Coxwell a few blocks south of the Danforth around 11 p.m. when he made a left turn into the path of a van that was coming up behind him.

8. Metrolinx Changes Plans for Strachan Avenue
Wow. After just a few weeks, Metrolinx has bowed to public pressure and changed its plans for Strachan Avenue. It had originally planned a "Super-Bridge" on Strachan to span the rail corridor, but is now opting to lower the rail corridor and build a smaller bridge that respects the local community... and they're going to include bikelanes.

9. Stuff: Extreme Folding Bike
Folding Bikes are cool - take them on transit, stick them in small trunks or backseats... but what if you need them to fit somewhere smaller?

10. Toronto's First BikeStation Getting Ready to Open
The City of Toronto has been working a while on preparing the city's first BikeStation at Union Station - a secure bike parking facility aimed at the hundreds of thousands of people who come in to downtown Toronto via train to work each day.

Yvonne Bambrick of the Toronto Cyclists Union left an excellent comment yesterday in our post linking to the Globe and Mail article about Streetcar Stop "Bump-Outs" with rounded curbs to allow cyclists to ride over them planned for Roncesvalles. I've included it below... what do *you* think? Respond in the comments section below or add on to Yvonne's comment.

10. Waterfront Toronto Unveils Queens Quay Plan
Waterfront Toronto has just released plans for the new "people-friendly" Queens Quay that we got a taste of back in 2006 with "Quay to the City" (photos at the end of this post). 4.
OMB Stops Walmart - Good News for East End Cyclists
This is great news for Toronto cyclists because not only will a 1,700 parking lot NOT be built, but the proposed SmartCentre plan called for multiple multi-lane driveways to be built across the multi-use path that runs along the north side of Lakeshore Boulevarde.

7. Headlines: Markham Pedestrian and Cycling Trail Controversial

2. 2009 Ice Bike Race Photos
Here are some photo collections of the Ice Bike Races from Saturday night. I didn't hear anything about it beforehand, but apparently they collected money for the cyclist that was purposely hit by a taxi (and subsequently lost his leg) and raised over $1000!

How do you live green?
I don't own a car. In Toronto, my bike is my car.

5. Ellen Page: Halifax Actor, Oscar Nominee, and Cyclist
Ellen Page is desperately seeking a bike mechanic. Which might seem strange, because for weeks now she’s had a sedan, complete with tinted windows and a black-suited driver, at her beck and call. It’s just one of the perks of being a Hollywood awards season hopeful. Back home in Nova Scotia, however, her wheels are decidedly less glamorous. “I don’t own a car where I live,” she says. “The way I get around is by foot and by bike."

6. 2009 Ice Bike Races
BikePirates is hosting an after-party following the races. They are located at 1292 Bloor Street West. If you're on facebook, check out the Facebook Event page for the races.

7. Weekly News Wrap-Up: Winter Riding and Training Bike Mechanics
3 main stories this week... first off, the Toronto Star and the Toronto Sun do write-ups of the Coldest Day of the Year Ride... an event put on by the city to show that even though Toronto winters get cold, it's still fun to ride. It took place on Jan. 30th... statistically the coldest day of the year.

8.
E-Bike Legislation to be Discussed at Queen's Park
Later this month (February 23 and 25th, to be exact), Queen's Park will reviewing amendments (in Bill 126 - PDF file) to Ontario's Highway Traffic Act in public hearings, including amendments concerning "E-Bikes" or "Power Assisted Bicycles"...

9. The ROM adds Public Art Bike Racks
Not all things are going bad for cyclists on Bloor St. The Royal Ontario Museum has unveiled 12 artful bikeracks that not only secure bikes but serve as sidewalk sculpture. Each takes it's inspiration from an exhibit within the museum.

10. Proof that BikeLanes are Good for Business
"Contrary to common public perception, the evidence shows that removing on-street parking to install a bicycle lane or widened sidewalk would likely increase not decrease commercial activity. "This report should alleviate concerns that downtown business owners have about on-street bicycle lanes", said Eva Ligeti, Executive Director of the Clean Air Partnership. "

2. TTC and Bikes Warm Welcome Hoax?
There's something banging around the internet today about a supposed new campaign by the TTC to "warmly welcome" cyclists with signs that say when bikes ARE allowed on the transit system as opposed to when they are NOT.

3. Weekly News Wrap-Up: Cycling into 2009
This is the first Wrap-Up since the Holidays, so we have some "Looking Back at 2008" as well as some "Looking Forward to 2009" news links for you.

How do you live green?
I don't own a car. In Toronto, my bike is my car.

6. Weekly News Wrap-Up: Bikes on Transit Hoax
The majority of news this week was about the Bikes on the TTC Hoax that some cycling people sent out using an anonymous email website. The email faked a TTC press release (complete with grammar and spelling errors), making unreasonable claims such as the TTC is considering reserving cars on subway trains just for cyclists and their bikes. It's hard to make space for bikes when there isn't enough space for people on the TTC during rush hour.

7. Weekly News Wrap-Up: Toronto Bike Awards, Laser Bikelanes and Re-Designing Jarvis
The majority of news this week was about the Toronto Bike Awards that were handed out on Tuesday night by the City of Toronto and the Toronto Cyclists Union.

8. City and Cyclist Union Bike Awards
The City of Toronto in partnership with the Toronto Cyclists Union will present the Bicycle Friendly Business Awards and the Cyclists Union own awards, the Golden Spokes.

9.
Report from the 2008 Toronto Bike Awards
Along with the award presentations, we were also treated to music by the band GUH, spinning by DJs Dorian and Dorian, a short musical called "Bicycle Revolution" by Clay and Paper Theatre, and a surprisingly provocative "Winter Cyclist Reverse Strip Tease" (in which people put *on* layers).

10.
Headlines: Pedal Powered Snowmobile
Clayton Preddy would like it if you got your own bike this winter. Just because yours doesn't have an indestructible polyurethane track for a back wheel, doesn't mean you can just jump on his any time you like.

Well, I meant to post this back in early October... I guess time got away from me. :)

Here are the Top Ten viewed posts from September:

Suburban Cycling Infrastructure in Aurora (Part 1 of 2)
I show photos of bikepaths beside Bayview Avenue in Aurora, and the missed opportunity of having a cool GTA-wide bike path network utilizing hydro corridors.

Suburban Cycling Infrastructure in Aurora (Part 2 of 2)
I show pictures and talk about unused bikelanes on empty streets in an Aurora subdivision that is cut off from everything else in Aurora by six-lane "arterial" roads that aren't condusive to cycling at all.

Globe & Mail - Commuting on two wheels and a prayer
Darren and Andrew are featured in a Globe & Mail article about biking in the 'burbs. You'll need a "Globe Insider" account to read the full article, because the Globe likes to screw with people who want to read their content. Go figure.

4 Weeks Until BikeFriday
A post about what I was trying to get going for September's BikeFriday.

A Few More Smelly Photos
Some photos from the Smells of Toronto Ride that Herb of the Cycling Cog organized. It was a smell-o-tastic evening!

More Bike Racks on Buses!!!
There was a chance that the Rack it & Rocket program would be discontinued, but the TTC voted to not only continue it, but add bikeracks to all new buses!

Another Cyclist Killed
A cyclist killed at Leslie & Eglinton by a cement truck.

3 Weeks Until BikeFriday
Another promo post for BikeFriday. :) Updating the Group Commute news, and what politicians are doing.

Biking Toronto's Top Ten Posts from August
Things like the Quay to the City bikepath photos and the whole bikeposts vs. lumber thing were popular, among others.

The Star - Machiavellian Cyclists
Kenneth Kidd includes the promotion of cycling as part of his 10 Point Transit Blueprint, saying that "we have to be a little Machiavellian here: you encourage cyclists because they make automobile travel even more inconvenient. Anybody who has ever driven on a downtown street during rush hour knows the platelet effect that bicycles have on the flow of traffic." Apparently, he's not yet realized that more cyclists on the roads will ease traffic, since you can fit 6-8 bike commuters in the space one person in a car takes up (this includes the space between it and the car behind it), but somewhat redeems himself by saying "we need to build bicycle parking lots all over the city core and give them pride of place. It does, after all, visibly speak to options other than cars."

I did this for July, and didn't hear any big complaints, so I thought I'd do it again.

Here are the top viewed BikingToronto August posts.

Photos of New Pedestrian and Cyclist Friendly Queens Quay
The Really Big Cycling News in August seemed to be the liberating of the eastbound lanes of Queens Quay from car traffic to make a cycling and pedestrian utopia.

Quay to the City
See? Popular!

The Grand Opening of Quay to the City
I went down for the grand opening on August 12th and took photos, as well as met a couple readers of this site, Anthony and Jun.

Hauler Event Poster
Move stuff with your bike! The City of Toronto Cycling Ambassadors put on a great event celebrating the methods people use to move big stuff by bike. I've been seeing more and more trailers and cool bikes with big storage areas since then.

Google Video of Bike Stunts
An amazing video of a girl doing unbelievable stunts on a brakeless, fixed-gear bike.

Bikepost Update - City to beef up bike stands
After a Toronto Star reporter had her bike stolen from in front of Police HQ on College Street, and reveals that bike thieves have discovered that the post-and-ring bikeposts can be broken with a 2x4 piece of wood and a lot of pressure... well, City Hall pays attention and comes up with a cool solution that won't deprive us of our lollipops.

Introducing BikeFriday
A simple idea that came out of the fact that it's a shame that BikeWeek only happens once a year and a bikepooling idea that Matt Blackett had emailed me about (which I'm still working on implementing for a daily project) was BikeFriday.

Mon, Aug 14th - Bike Events This Week
All about Quay to the City. I think it got a lot of hits because it was linked by a neat new site called BikeHugger.

Thurs, Aug. 17th - Bike News From Other Cities
- A temporary highways over a river in NYC becoming a bike route.
- Cycling in London, U.K., up 72% since 2000!
- Making Bike Commuting viable in Seattle
- Kids in Portland open up their own bike shop!
- A Paris highway is turned into a beach

Crashing the BikeFriday Photoshoot
A story about riding around the financial district so the Toronto Star could take a ton of photos of me cycling with traffic for an article about BikeFriday. I also almost get doored, being saved by my good instincts and low speed (I never understand cyclists who confuse Toronto with the Tour de France...), and have a nice conversation in the comments with a former bike courier who thinks that he is the only without fault cyclist on the roads.

Hahaha. A courier thinks that. Nothing against couriers... I not only admire and am a little jealous of a job spent on a bike, but some (not all) of them are completely nuts.
