The Toronto Star is reporting on a cyclist-car collision from last night:

The 53-year-old man was heading west on Rogers Rd. in the bike lane shortly after 7 p.m. At Silverthorn Ave., the van turned right and he hit the side.

The force of the crash threw him to the ground, where he hit his head. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police are still investigating and haven't laid any charges so far.

"Both drivers could have had opportunities to avoid this, by being a little more aware and a little more alert," said Sgt. Tim Burrows, adding that the cyclist could have slowed down and waited for the van to turn, while the van driver could have paid closer attention and seen the cyclist coming up from behind.

I think it's a little pre-mature to blame one or both of the drivers... the van may not have signalled the intention to turn right... leading the cyclist to believe that the van would head straight through the intersection.

On the other hand, the van may have signalled, with the cyclist opting to pass the van in the bikelane.

Was it a hit-and-run? An attempted robbery? Police are still trying to iron out the details of a bizarre incident early Friday morning. A cyclist was taken to hospital after his leg was reportedly severed in a collision with a cab near the intersection of Dovercourt Rd. and Dundas St. It's believed the cab backed into the man, hit a pole, and took off at about 2:30am.

Toronto police are trying to figure out how a taxi nearly severed a cyclist's leg early Friday morning. The incident happened at around 2:30 a.m. at the corner of Dovercourt Road and Argyle Street. Witnesses told police they heard shouting, followed by the sound of a crash. Then they saw a Beck's taxi leaving the scene and a cyclist lying at the side of the road in obvious pain. A few hours later, a taxi driver contacted police and said he had been assaulted just before the incident.

On Wednesday, we had a cyclist fatality in the west end (at Trethewey Dr. and Tedder St.). The Toronto Sun is reporting that charges are pending against the driver:

"The cyclist was travelling westbound, was wearing a helmet and taking all the necessary precautions as far as clothing and visibility," Sgt. Tim Burrows said. "For whatever reason the cyclist was just not seen by the driver of the 4Runner."

Police said the man's family asked them not to release his name.

The Sun also has a video about this, which I've embedded below (there's an ad first though):

You may have seen this news in your local paper, or in yesterday's "Headlines" post, but in case you haven't...

The driver who opened their car door and
hit a cyclist in May, resulting in that cyclists crashing and then getting run over by a van is being fined $110 for it.

The Toronto Cyclists Union has been active in getting police to charge the driver with something, but a fine of $110 for "Open Vehicle Door Improperly" is falling rather short of what should be done. Wouldn't something like "negligence causing death / bodily harm" be more appropriate?

The Highway Traffic Act doesn't agree with me:

The Highway Traffic Act, Section 165, requires that:

No person shall open the door of a motor vehicle on a highway without first taking due precautions to ensure that his or her act will not interfere with the movement of or endanger any other person or vehicle: (Fine $110 and two demerit points). [source]

If a driver was backing out of a parking space without looking and ran over a child, they'd have some answering to do, wouldn't they?

I'm glad to report that yesterday's "Headlines" post alerted TreeHugger to this, and they've posted about it here.

Two years ago, cyclist Ryan Carriere was hit by a truck turning from Queen Street West onto Gladstone Avenue. He was on his way home to go trick-or-treating with his kids.

Spacing has a post up today
remembering him and bringing attention to the efforts of J. Patrick Brown, a lawyer representing Ryan's family, in getting politicians to make streets safer for cyclists:

Ryan was a loving and devoted husband and an amazing father to his two young children. He was also a valued member of his community. Ryan prided himself on protecting the environment and was a proactive silent advocate by cycling to and from work. Ryan was tragically killed on his bike at the intersection of Queen and Gladstone. The second anniversary of Ryan’s death is this Halloween.

In addition to this extremely tragic accident, I am seeing more and more alarming accidents caused to cyclist by motorists on the streets of Toronto, and in particular Queen Street. These accidents to cyclists will leave some with life long disabilities. As well, the present law in Ontario restricts and limits compensation to many of these individuals.

The need for a greener and safer Toronto is paramount. A number of citizen cyclists have become exasperated with non-action by the City and have advocated for a bike lane on Queen Street, only to have the City remove their efforts.

More on Spacing Toronto.

Happy Biking, Ryan. Happy Biking.

Just a reminder that the Memorial Ride for Charlie Princep goes tonight at 6 PM at Jet Fuel Coffee at 519 Parliament (at Winchester, just north of Carlton in Cabbagetown).

The Globe and Mail also has a nice article about Charlie in the paper today:

On Tuesday, about 180 people gathered at St. Paul's Church on Bloor Street to remember the young man, who family friend Stuart Lazier called an independent thinker passionate about cities and the environment. "He was a young man who didn't just talk the story; he lived it," Mr. Lazier told mourners, adding that Mr. Prinsep would ride his bike everywhere - even in the winter - and would show up caked in mud with a grin on his face.

"Charlie, you were an inspiration to us all," Mr. Lazier said, fighting back tears. "You died living your dream. You died happy and fulfilled."

Be sure and go read it before the Globe puts it in the paid subscription area.

Darren over on I Bike T.O. posted a great post about the tragic circumstances around the cyclist fatality that happened on the bridge on Leslie Street that spans the 401. The road is of course busy (if I remember correctly, the speed limit is 80 km/h), and with no space on the asphalt for cyclists, so many use the sidewalk to stay safe.

Unfortunately for one cyclist on July 18th, his handlebars brushed the bridge, and he fell off his bike, falling to his death to the 407 since the top of the bridge railing is not much higher than a bike (photo above).

Yes, this is very much like what happened on Burnamthorpe last year.

Darren also took a video of the type of traffic that is on Leslie at the 407.

A bit of "blogosphere" news for you today... the excellent weblog TreeHugger picked up on the Charlie Princep tragedy yesterday:
He was hit by a drunk driver that veered onto the paved shoulder in Brooks, Alberta, "Flesh and blood against gasoline, alcohol and two tons of steel." Getting people onto bikes is just about the greenest thing we can do. How can we make it safe for them? How many people do we have to lose before cyclists are given the space they deserve?
There was supposed to be a feature on CBC Radio One (99.1 FM) today at 10 AM... did anyone happen to catch it?

You can read Charlie's blog about his trip, and attend the Charlie Princep Memorial Bike Ride. Everyone is meeting up at Jet Fuel Coffee in Cabbagetown (on Parliament, just north of Carlton) at 6 PM tomorrow, August 17th.

It's the drivers who use the intersection where a 39-year-old mother was killed Wednesday who are the problem, not the design, the city councillor for the area said yesterday.

Yes, the driver in the road rage incident yesterday (the one in which a driver lost his bananas on a cyclist who didn't bike through a yellow light) is a policeman. A suspended policeman.

I'm tempted to give some "props" to the cop for turning himself in... but wonder if he would've if a video camera didn't catch the whole thing? Let's be positive and assume he would have.

Interesting coverage (and subsequent coverage) in the Toronto blogs today too:

Spacing Wire - comments are generally supportive of the cyclist, with some discussing ways to discourage automobile use on smog days.

BlogTO - comments are mixed ... some are saying that the cyclist wanted to throw his bike on the hood of the car (which somehow justifies the behaviour of the driver?)

The cyclist does pick up his bike, but seeing as how it's AFTER the driver has already kicked it, I think the cyclist was just trying to get the bike out of harms way. Add this to the fact that the cyclist was trying to get away from the psycho driver hitting him... well, it doesn't seem like the cyclist is that confrontational.

Now, having made that argument... if a driver kicked or hit your bike with the intention of damaging it... why is intending to damage their car viewed as worse? Because the driver spent more money on their vehicle? That's their mistake.

Motor Vehicle Crashes Take Toll on Orthopaedic Health

According to Transport Canada, approximately 210,000 Canadians are injured in traffic incidents every year. For people under 25, the numbers are particularly alarming. This age group accounts for 24% of all drivers killed or injured, 44% of passengers killed, and 47% of passengers injured.

Almost half of severe injuries in Canada, reports the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), result from motor vehicle crashes. The CIHI report says major trauma patients most commonly suffer head injuries, followed closely by orthopaedic injuries.

Whether you're the cause of a crash or the victim of someone else's bad driving, Berg says, these crashes always come down to poor decision making - things like speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving, unsafe passing, following too closely, or running stop signs or traffic lights.

Cops Launch Big Crackdown On Drivers & Pedestrians

You can't blame Toronto drivers if they sometime think police are ganging up on them.

But now those behind the wheel will be happy to hear cops are putting a different foot down - this time on pedestrians.

Toronto's finest have announced a one week campaign called "Operation Safe Journey" which will not only drop the hammer on bad drivers but bad pedestrians as well.

It's easy to blame drivers when people get hit and sometimes they are at fault.

Pedestrians are NEVER at fault. On city roads, other than highways, pedestrians ALWAYS have the right-of-way. If they break the law and jay-walk, drivers are obliged to stop.

Cycling Poker Run to help a fellow cyclist:

When: Saturday, March 24th, 2 PM

Where: Cloud Gardens Park (Yonge & Temperance)

What: A Poker Run is not a race. It's a fun ride at your own pace. At each stop you will receive a playing card. At the last stop the person with the highest poker hand wins.

Why: We are trying to get as many people as possible to come out and help raise money for a fellow cyclist named Tom. Tom is here visiting from Australia and on Wednesday March 14th, he was riding his bike when he was run over by a large pickup truck, causing extensive damage to his leg. All money raised will go towards Tom's medical costs and living expenses while here in our city.

Cost: $10

Ah, I kind of pity Rob Ford. He's way out in Etobicoke-land... his braincells always under assault by carcinogen-laced car and truck exhaust...

From the Star, and picked up by BlogTO:
"I can't support bike lanes. Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks. My heart bleeds when someone gets killed, but it's their own fault at the end of the day."

-Rob Ford, Toronto City Councilor

I'd like to invite Rob to check out archive of Toronto's Weekly Carnage - it's not just cyclists in there... most of it is other people in cars dying, and pedestrians dying. Using your logic it's their fault they were killed because they were in a car, or going for a walk.

And for the record, roads have been around for FAR longer than cars have been. Thousands of years longer... the Roman Empire had a fantastic road system, and not one car! Not even a moped!

Even here in Toronto, roads pre-date cars.
