Here are the headlines from this week:
  • Star: Cyclist slings to life after leg severed

Burrows said the cab driver failed to remain at the scene and could very possibly face charges. The driver could face additional charges if it is determined to be a case of road rage, Burrows said. “In a situation like this, it’s hard to know what charges and who will be charged. It’s a flip of a coin, because right now the story we have is all over the place,” he added. The cyclist was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital, where doctors worked to reattach the amputated limb. The surgery was unsuccessful, and the victim remains in critical care in the hospital, said Burrows.
  • National Post: Cyclist loses leg after bizarre Dovercourt Road incident

Surgeons removed the leg of a Toronto cyclist after it was badly damaged in a bizarre incident outside a trendy Dovercourt Road loft building this morning. ‘‘His leg was amputated,’’ said Sgt. Tim Burrows of Toronto police. ‘‘There was significant damage done to that leg.’’ The cyclist, a 36-year-old man, was injured in an altercation on the corner of Dovercourt and Argyle Street, near the Argyle Lofts and the popular Luna Cafe, at 2:27 a.m.
  • CityNews: Police Interviewing Cabbie Following Bizarre Incident West Of Downtown

Was it a hit-and-run? An attempted robbery? Police are still trying to iron out the details of a bizarre incident early Friday morning. A cyclist was taken to hospital after his leg was reportedly severed in a collision with a cab near the intersection of Dovercourt Rd. and Dundas St. It's believed the cab backed into the man, hit a pole, and took off at about 2:30am.
  • CBC: Cyclist badly injured in taxi collision

Toronto police are trying to figure out how a taxi nearly severed a cyclist's leg early Friday morning. The incident happened at around 2:30 a.m. at the corner of Dovercourt Road and Argyle Street. Witnesses told police they heard shouting, followed by the sound of a crash. Then they saw a Beck's taxi leaving the scene and a cyclist lying at the side of the road in obvious pain. A few hours later, a taxi driver contacted police and said he had been assaulted just before the incident. Officers are questioning the driver, but he's not under arrest.
  • Star: City launches clean commute plan

The TTC might be the better way, but then again so could a bike, a brisk walk or a lift from a neighbour. That will be the message of the Toronto area's newest "Smart Commute" association, designed to coax city commuters out of their cars by enlisting the support of employers and property managers.
  • Newswire: SIU Appeals for Witnesses to Collision between Police Vehicle and Cyclist in Mississauga

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to a collision between a Peel Regional Police cruiser and a cyclist. The collision occurred on Friday November 7, 2008 at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Brandon Gate Drive just east of Goreway Drive in the Malton area of Mississauga. The officer driving a marked cruiser was attempting to stop a 24-year-old man on a bicycle for investigation when the collision occurred. The man was treated in hospital for a broken knee.
