There's been a whole lot of press about the Toronto Cyclists Union this week. I've included links to all of the stuff I've come across in the "News Links" posts, but thought I'd put it all into one handy post for you:

Cyclists need a bicycle built for T.O.

If successful, this could inspire other disenfranchised groups to organize, creating the Dog Walkers Guild, the Toronto Chapter of Ice Cream Vendors and the United Federation of GTA Kite Flyers.

The Toronto Cyclists Union

Earlier this week the Toronto Cyclists Union announced they are officially up and running. The official media launch took place on Tuesday at City Hall Peace Garden amongst cyclists from across the city.

In particular, the group has made it clear it will be applying - and maintaining - pressure to make sure the city paints more bike lanes across the city as set out in Toronto's Bike Plan.

Toronto cyclists' big adventure

They'll be screening the cult hit Pee-wee's Big Adventure ("a really beautiful and touching story about a boy and his bike," according to event organizer Dave Meslin) and, on a stage in front of the screen, a full-cast re-enactment of the film...

Q+A with the Bike Union's Yvonne Bambrick

We can do so much better. Toronto is positioning itself as one of the greenest cities in North America, but if we lack the most basic infrastructure required for sustainable transportation, how green are we?

Cyclists' union 'strong voice' for bike riders

The union will lobby city hall for the bike lanes and amenities needed to make cycling from the suburbs to downtown viable.

Cyclists get in gear to speak with a unified voice

"There's an attitude shift taking place as gas prices go up," Mr. Heaps said. Biking can be faster than travelling by car, and suburban commuters can combine cycling with public transit to avoid rush-hour frustrations. "At some point or another, people...

A true bicycle culture remains elusive

Mass movements tend not to be engendered by death-defying activity. "You don't buy a car if there's no roads," grumbles Adrian Heaps. "You don't ride a bike if there's no infrastructure for it. And we don't have anywhere near enough."

Cycling's union movement

The union aims to hold city councillors, many of whom may be surprised at how many cyclists they have in their wards, accountable. "We've got this incredible bike plan that council passed in 2001– it's visionary," says Yvonne Bambrick...
