From the BikingToronto Inbox:

Just in time for Toronto Bike Month, a group of cyclists will gather to inaugurate the first section of new cycling road infra-structure to hit Toronto streets this year. The new sharrows on Hallam Street stretching from Dufferin to Ossington are part of the Toronto Bike Plan. Sharrows are commonly used where roads are not wide enough for bike lanes.

"The new sharrows look great' says Wendy Lucas. 'Much more bike-friendly. They are a great addition to the road and a long time coming.'

The distinctive markings remind drivers to share the road with cyclists and are a key component in traffic calming. The Hallam sharrows were announced during the summer of 2007 by the City of Toronto together with another set of sharrows to be installed in the area on Lappin Ave.

'It's encouraging to see this new infra-structure being installed during of springtime when the number of cyclists in Toronto increases dramatically.' says Margaret Hastings-James, member of the Toronto Cycling Advisory Committee (TCAC). 'It shows the city is serious about catching up as far as the bike plan is concerned. So, keep it up.'

In order to commemorate the occasion, local residents, cyclists and community groups will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at Hallam and Dovercourt (at the boundary of Wards 18 & 19) complete with cake and party favours.

When:
Saturday, May 24, 6:00 PM
Where: Corner of Hallam and Dovercourt
