Toronto has had a lot of snow this winter. Most of it has come down in February. This means that snowplow drivers and other city staff that keep the thoroughfares clear haven't had as much time to get rid of all that snow. Rather, they've piled it up in drifts and incurred the complaints of drivers and cyclists alike.
However, it's perhaps a good thing that these snowbanks are here and cutting down the width of roads - it shows us just what happens when lanes built for cars are blocked. Darren of Toronto Cranks was out with a camera on Pharmacy Avenue after a recent snowfall and documented how the snowbanks created bikelanes out of curblanes, and how automobile traffic wasn't effected at all:
It may be good to remember this the next time the city wants to put in bikelanes and someone says that less room for cars means more congestion.
