Sad news from Mississauga:

An early morning crash Saturday in Peel Region left a woman in hospital fighting for her life. Today, she succumbed to her injuries.

The 31-year-old was riding southbound when she collided with a dump truck at the Mavis and Central Parkway intersection. The dump truck was also south bound. The victim was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital. Peel Police are asking anyone who saw the accident to contact them at the Major Collision Bureau at (905) 453-2121 Ext. 3710, or Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

There is a memorial ride planned to lay some flowers this Sunday - I'll update you when and if I know more about this.

That's awful news.

RIP, Mississauga Bikester.

These local tragedies remind me of how dangerous cycling is and how lucky I've been (so far). They frighten me, in fact. When the TV news is on, I change channels when I see a car accident. It's sad news and what can you do? But this site has me looking at these horrors and realizing up close and personal the reality of the chances cyclists take. And it's not always cars we have to watch out for, either. I have almost been hit countless times by cyclists and inline skaters on the sidewalk coming from behind. I feel as if I should wear a helmet with a mirror attached just walking down the street. Use some common sense, people. But the more of us that brave the dangers of cycling, perhaps the more likely we will win the fight for bike lanes and priorities for bikes in Canada.
