I can only imagine how happy I'd be biking around a place like Copenhagen, Denmark (link goes to the Copenhagen Cycling Page, where there is an amazing video about cycling there called "City of Cyclists" - thanks to BikePortland.org for the link) where the streets are regularly packed with cyclists.
I was joyous this morning (but not dancing on my bike or anything...) caught up in another mini-mass, biking along with 7 other cyclists westbound on Gerrard at River. It was a beautiful thing. Since today and every day for the next seven days are supposed to be nice and warm (above 15 degree celcius... maybe even 20 on Sunday!), I am ecstatic about seeing lots of cyclists with me on the roads.
I'll have to start carrying a camera around with me again, so I can document it for you.
That's great, Joe. Has it been windy downtown? It's been pretty windy further north for sure. I wonder if these spontaneous mini-masses will turn into spontaneous drafting pace-lines.
Cool. If I ever found myself in a group of 7 other cyclists on my way to work through Etobicoke and Mississauga, I'd think I was lost in some alternate reality!
Today a co-worker was asking me a bunch of stuff about riding to work, route choice, etc. He doesn't live too far away, but unfortunately there's no easy way to get here without going on some really insane roads. Gotta cross the 403 too.
Unfortunately, there's probably even less of a chance of riding with a big group of people for him.
I hope he doesn't get discouraged, but the reality out here is that the roads are scary, and there are hardly any other cyclists out here.
Darren, it wasn't windy this morning, but it was a bit on my ride home. Vic... it's a bit weird downtown so far this year (less weird in the summer)... enough that I was grinning while biking along with the group.
Please take some photos. I'd love to see it. I think I see too many fraidy-cats on Queen St. to witness any congregating.
